New Zuiko lenses for E-System

Digital Photography Review writes: Alongside the E-3 Olympus has also released four new Zuiko Digital lenses, three of which feature Olympus' Supersonic Wave Drive focus system and splashproofing. Let's kick off with the 12-60 f/2.8-4.0 which offers a 5x 24-120mm equiv. zoom range and 25cm closest focus as well as the aforementioned SWD and weathersealing. Next up is the 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 which Olympus claim is twice as fast to focus as its predecessor thanks to SWD. Splashproofing and a polarizer-friendly lens hood also boost its appeal. No other manufacturer can offer a 28-70 equiv. lens at f/2.0 but the 14-35 f/2.0 is just that - a fast, high quality 'normal' zoom with quiet and swift focus which doesn't mind the occasional soaking. The 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 is a little more humdrum but offers Four Thirds users a 140-600mm field of view in a compact and versatile package. Also announced is a new 2.0x teleconverter - the EC-20. The 12-60, 50-200, 70-300 and EC-20 should be available come November 2007 with the 14-35 following in early 2008.

Canon Powershot G9 Review

PhotographyBLOG writes: The Canon Powershot G9 sees the welcome return of the RAW image format to the G-series of prosumer compact digital cameras. Controversially dropped from the previous G7 model, Canon have bowed to customer demand and restored RAW, once again making the Powershot G9 a great backup camera for a DSLR owner, or even a viable alternative. Other new features on the Canon G9 include an upgraded 12.1 megapixel sensor, larger 3 inch LCD screen, and improved Face Detection mode. From the outside the G9 looks virtually identical to the G7, so are there enough internal improvements to make the G9 a worthwhile upgrade? The S8000fd’s lens starts at 27mm wide, just beating the 28mm lenses of the Panasonic and Olympus models, and ends at 486mm. There’s a new CCD-shift image stabilisation system to help ensure that your photos are sharp, an essential feature given the huge zoom range on offer, plus an 8 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD screen, electronic viewfinder, 1cm macro mode and Face Detection. With a retail price of £299 / $399, and a street price of around £225 / $350, the Fujifilm S8000fd is also a little bit cheaper than its rivals. On paper at least the Fujifilm Finepix S8000fd has a feature list that should meet the needs of most photographers, but does it live up to its potential? Carry on reading our review to find out…

Canon PowerShot S5 IS Review

PhotographyBLOG writes: The Canon PowerShot S5 IS is Canon’s top-of-the-range ultra-zoom compact camera, with an image-stabilized 12x optical zoom lens offering a focal range of 36-432mm, fast aperture range of f/2.7 – f/3.5 and an Ultrasonic Motor for silent auto-focusing. With an external flash hot shoe for use with selected Canon EX Speedlites, chunky hand grip and mode wheel, the S5 IS is very much styled like an entry-level DSLR camera. The 8 megapixel Canon S5 IS also benefits from a versatile 2.5 inch vari-angle LCD screen, Canon’s DIGIC III processor (as used in their range of DSLRs), Face Detection AF/AE/FE and ISO speeds up to a maximum of 1600. There’s a choice of 22 shooting modes, including Manual mode for creative control, and a 0cm Super Macro mode for extreme close-ups! With a recommended price of over £400, the Canon PowerShot S5 IS is competing directly with a lot of budget SLRs, as well as cheaper high-end bridge cameras, so does it offer enough to compete? Gavin Stoker finds out…
